Here at the
Bear, we are following the best government advice and going beyond to ensure
the hotel environment is as clean as possible, regularly sanitising all
surfaces within the hotel and encouraging the use of hand sanitiser which is
provided for our guests.
The Bear has
been a central feature of Crickhowell since 1432 and we are looking at all
credible options available to us to ensure this remains the case, being here to
support the community and our loyal staff and local suppliers who are at the
heart and soul of our business.
Unless the government advises otherwise, we will remain open
for business, taking all necessary precautions so customers may see some
changes in the way we are operating.

For meat fans, a new dish is crispy slow-cooked pork belly, cooked sous vide then crisped in the pan. This is accompanied by bread-crumbed pork cheek, smoked macaroni cheese and wild garlic crumb. There are also old favourites like lamb shank and soon-to-be new favourites like beef cheek. Hearty meals for healthy appetites, with the reassurance that all our meat is sourced from Master Butcher Richards, just across the road.
For vegetarians, a new dish is a curry-roasted cauliflower, coriander cream sauce, jacket potato mash, crispy skins and a curried beetroot crumb.
Our new Sous Chef, Trevor, says: “People want dishes with plenty of flavour and colour when the weather is like this, which is what we like to provide.”
You can choose whether to eat next to the log fire in our cosy bar, or in the refined atmosphere of our restaurant.

Come to Crickhowell for a fabulous week of walks and events, and eat and stay at the Best Walkers’ Pub in Wales. Early March (7th-15th this year) sees the annual Crickhowell Walking Festival; 9 days of guided walks, talks and events in the beautiful Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. And The Bear at Crickhowell is right at the heart of it; we were named Silver Medallist in the UK-Wide Walkers’ Pub of the Year 2019 competition run by The Great Outdoors Magazine, and the Best in Wales. We are a venue for Walking Festival events, a luxurious place to stay and a stopping point for breakfast, lunch, dinner, real ale or gin and aromatic tonic.
There 84 walks and events in all with different grades of
difficulty, ranging from One to Four Boots.
As most of the walks take place on open mountain and moorland, appropriate clothing is required at all times.
This includes:- walking boots (not trainers), hat, gloves, warm clothing, waterproof jacket and trousers.
You will need to bring your own food and drink (preferably a hot drink for the 3 and 4 boot walks). The Bear offers packed lunches by arrangement.
You should carry a rucksack to put your spare clothing, food and drink and personal items in.
Don’t worry about boots at The Bear, we have hard floors, so they are not a problem, just try to wash them off as well as you can before you come in. Your dog is welcome, too, we are very dog-friendly at The Bear.
If you want to come at other times of the year, The Bear is on the Eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, in the pretty town of Crickhowell. We have the Black Mountains to our back and the Brecon Beacons in front of us. We are at the head of a uniquely independent High Street, full of quirky, family-run businesses and winner of the Best High Street in the UK Award 2018.
We have three bars and two restaurants. We have oak beams and real fires and we pride ourselves on our wide-ranging menu and speed of service if that is what you require (we won’t hurry you if you want a leisurely meal instead.) We also offer packed lunches by arrangement.
If you want to stay, we have 36 uniquely furnished rooms, some with four-poster beds and spa baths. Dogs can stay in most rooms for a small extra charge.
